Story of … The Alexa Dress

Creating this dress was nothing short of a dream fulfilled. Originally designed for Vancouver Fashion Week Spring 2019, it was a true labor of love—a collaboration between the talented painter Alexa Snyder and myself.

Alexa hand-painted the silk, and from there, I transformed it into a nearly zero-waste gown, blending her artwork with my signature woven linen technique. The result? A timeless, captivating piece that went on to inspire the Hybrid project and the new direction of AmZ in general.

Working with natural textiles always gives me a sense of connection, but with this silk, touched by Alexa’s work, that bond deepened. The entire process felt almost magical—like the fabric came to life in my hands, evolving into something greater than we had imagined. Shown below is one initial trial, but eventually the dress pulled me in a more natural direction.

The dress was the grand finale of the Vancouver Fashion Week Spring 2019 show. It later found a home in Alexa’s shop, The Yellow Mustard Seed in Pacific Grove, California, where it sold in 2020. As if the story couldn’t get any better, we’ve remained closely connected with the client. Stay tuned for part two—this journey is far from over.
